What is Homecoming?

Life in the city can be overwhelming, as we often fall into the same routine day after day. However, festivals offer a precious opportunity to reset and reconnect with our loved ones, helping us to re-center ourselves.

Connecting with our roots can be a powerful reminder of what truly matters in life. Whether it's collecting eggs on Easter, playing with water during Songkran, dressing up on Puthandu and Vaisakhi, or asking for forgiveness on Eid, we all have our unique ways of reconnecting. Festivals are not just about having fun; they are also a time to bond with loved ones. These moments provide a chance to take a break from our busy lives and spend quality time with the people who matter most.

Reuniting with our loved ones and rediscovering what truly matters can help us prioritise our physical and mental well-being, allowing us to create lasting memories that we can cherish for a lifetime.

In Vietnam, we have three major festivals: Lunar New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day. Lunar New Year and National Day have cultural activities, gifts, greetings, and fireworks.
However, the Mid-Autumn Festival is mainly for children, who get lanterns, snacks, and funny masks, and spend time outdoors. These festivals are where homecoming happens, as we go back to our hometowns, reconnect with loved ones, and participate in cultural activities as a family.

Homecoming, to me, means reconciliation. After years of struggling to get along with my parents, I avoided them after college. During Ramadhan 2020, I moved back home and realised they were the only ones who would always be there for me. We repaired our relationship and had the best time together.
I'm grateful for this opportunity to reconcile and reconnect with my parents.

Homecoming fills me with nostalgia and warmth, as I anticipate reuniting with family, cousins, and old friends I haven't seen in a while. It's a pleasant excuse to savour home-cooked delicacies while enjoying the company of loved ones.
Although I seldom celebrate Songkran since moving to Singapore, the memories stay with me. As a child, spraying and pouring water on others was the highlight of the festival. As I grew older, I also visited the temple to pray with my parents as part of the festivities. I always look forward to spending quality time with my loved ones.

My homecoming or the period of rest and reparation is always centered around traveling with or to family and friends. But now that I'm a dad with a 1-year-old, things are a bit different.
Being a dad will definitely change the way we travel, but that didn't stop us, in fact, we've even got a big trip to Europe planned for the middle of this year! We're so excited to catch up with all our loved ones overseas, even though we know it won't be easy with a little one in tow. But hey, we're up for the challenge!

Homecoming holds a deep significance for me as I couldn't celebrate Eid with my family due to travel restrictions. Finally, after three years, I can go back and celebrate with my loved ones.
This year is even more special as a new father, looking forward to spending quality time with my newborn baby. I started counting down the days as soon as Ramadan began. This celebration holds a special place in my heart, and I am grateful for the opportunity to experience a true homecoming after a long time away.

Although achieving something personally can bring a sense of accomplishment, sharing that experience with the people we care about can add greater significance and meaning to that achievement.
It's a way to celebrate together, to feel supported, and to deepen our connections with each other. This anticipation of being able to share our accomplishments with loved ones is something that many of us look forward to.

Homecoming was a refreshing break from the confinement of my dorm room. It allowed me to be myself, unlike in public or the dorm where I felt guarded.
Homecoming and Ramadan have a commonality: the meal brings us together, allowing us to break our fast as a group. Normally, we eat at separate times, but during these occasions, we share meals and bond over the experience.
